In many cases energy materials can be difficult to study by TEM as they suffer from electron beam damage. A comparative HAADF-STEM study of the layered oxides Li-Ru-Ti-O and Li-Ru-Sn-O at different stages allowed establishing the cation migration pathways during charge-discharge processes and identifying the cation traps responsible for the degradation of the electrochemical performance. Capacity and voltage fading are among the key issues defining applicability of Li-ion battery materials. The structure of a new perovskite-based polymorph of Mn2O3 has been directly visualized and charge ordering of Mn2+, Mn3+ and Mn4+ is detected by EELS. We demonstrated the power of aberration-corrected STEM combined with EELS for atomic resolution mapping of the valence state of the Mn cations in the Mn3O4 spinel-type structure. Mn-oxides are known as excellent catalysts for photochemical water oxidation. The technique is able to provide atomic scale information on morphology, structure, composition and electronic bonding. Important is to understand the processes occurring at a nanoscale or even an atomic scale. A number of materials benefit from their nanostructured state.
